10 reasons why I loved ‘The Mindy Project’

I am bit selective when it comes to watching television. I just cannot sit hours watching anything. For me, a show should have a compelling theme, convincing characters, a brilliant dose of humour and overall appealing. Last week I completed watching all the six seasons of the sit-com The Mindy Project on Amazon Prime, and I must say I loved it. I do have a soft corner for the protagonist Dr. Mindy Lahiri played by Mindy Kaling herself, but then there are more reasons for loving the show! Here’s a list of 10 reasons why I loved the show.

1. Mindy Lahiri owns the show, and her life. She has a charming screen presence. The show is called The Mindy Project and it is really all about her, with characters and situations revolving around Mindy. Also, she is the one who is solely in charge of her life, and I loved that.

2. The show has abundant humour. Each episode of the show has enough comedy to keep you glued to watching it.

3. Mindy is a gynaecologist by profession, and is very good at her job, which I feel is a realistic thing. A woman’s success in her profession is often overlooked in tv shows. Also, she is an independent, opinionated and strong woman, who starts her dream business besides her job.

4. The amazing cast crew in The Mindy Project are just brilliant and complement each other beautifully. They also add to the comic element of the show. Mindy’s co-workers are much of a part of life for her, (which is quite realistic for a busy doctor like her).

5. Mindy Lahiri is seen to evolve over the seasons of the show. As we come to know her better, we learn about how realistically a character is portrayed on screen. She has her fears, insecurities, likes, dislikes, eccentricities and generosity. She sets her priorities right and ultimately realises what she wants in her life.

6. This show is not about relationships and marriage alone, which I feel becomes most often quite a stereotype for a show with a female lead. The show does focus a lot on the work life of the characters and their dreams and aspirations in life.

7. The Mindy Project has shown postpartum as something real. This aspect of a woman’s life is hardly ever shown on screen. In the show, Mindy’s emotional and mental struggle after having a baby and wanting to carry on with her job as before is something I personally related a lot with.

8. Mindy’s love for food and her not caring about the cellulite gives a strong message of body positivity. She embraces herself for who she is, aware of her professional success and her strengths and weakness, and this is what makes Mindy so admirable.

9. The show is a lot about friendship and love. The most interesting of all bonds is the one between Mindy and Morgan. Mindy’s relationship with Annette is another remarkable aspect of the show.

10. The Mindy Project has a very well-written and interesting script. Humour flows gently throughout the episodes, yet there is a distinct connect between every successive season.

I could personally relate a lot with Mindy Lahiri, whether it is about the fear of getting murdered while I sleep, or my love for food over most things in life, or even my being crazy for colourful clothes! If you are looking for a good show that entertains you thoroughly, you may try watching this one streaming on Amazon Prime now!
